Periodontics It's possible to have gum disease and not be aware of it. That's why it is important to have routine check-ups and examinations. Gum disease (periodontal disease) is an infection that affects the tissues and supporting bone. As the tissues are damaged, the pockets surrounding the teeth become larger allowing bacteria, plaque and tarter to collect on root surfaces. If left untreated, this can lead to tooth loss. More and more evidence is showing that there is a relationship between periodontal disease and other diseases such as heart disease.
X-Rays Bitewing - used to determine the presence of decay between teeth. Periapical - shows root structures, cysts, bone level or other pathology. Panoramic - a broadview of entire structure of mouth in one film. It is used to determine if pathology is present, position of wisdom teeth, etc. It is not used to diagnose cavities.
