Root Canal Therapy

As a Waco general dentist, Dr. Locke can perform root canal therapy to save a damaged tooth from extraction. Despite advances in tools and techniques that have made root canal treatment more comfortable than ever, it still remains one of the most feared dental procedures. Some common myths that contribute to misconceptions about root canal therapy include:

  1. Root canal therapy will hurt – A root canal is generally performed when a patient experiences pain from a damaged tooth. Infected tooth pulp, a broken tooth, and/or a dying nerve usually indicate the need for root canal therapy. The root canal will alleviate pain, rather than cause pain. Most patients admit that they feel much better after Dr. Locke has restored the tooth.

  2. A root canal requires several appointments appointments to Dr. Locke's Central Texas dental office – In most cases, Dr. Locke can perform root canal therapy in one or two visits to his dental office in Waco. The extent of infection and the complexity of the tooth canal will determine the exact form of treatment and number of appointments required to complete the procedure.

  3. Benefits of root canal therapy won’t last long – A tooth treated with a root canal can potentially last a lifetime. This myth originated after patients experienced a broken tooth following root canal treatment. When the infected pulp inside of the tooth is removed, the tooth becomes brittle. Failing to have a crown placed over the tooth can result in breakage. Using high-quality porcelain, Dr. Locke will create durable, attractive dental crowns that blend in with your smile.

  4. It’s easier to have the tooth extracted – – Tooth extraction and replacement are comparatively invasive procedures that require several appointments to complete. If not replaced, the missing tooth can cause the surrounding teeth to shift and contribute to bone and further tooth loss. Keeping your natural teeth and teeth roots is almost always preferable to extracting and replacing them with prosthetics.

As a general and family dentist serving the communities of Waco, Hewitt, McGregor, and the surrounding areas, Dr. Locke strives to help his patients keep their natural teeth for as long as possible.
