What do you know about gum disease? Despite the widespread nature of this disease few people understand the causes or the steps necessary to help prevent it. Knowing common facts about gum disease can help protect the health and stability of your smile.

Facts About Gum Disease

  1. The disease is widespread: The Centers for Disease Control recently conducted a study on the subject, showing that half of adults over 30 exhibit symptoms of gum disease. That means in the United States just under 65 million people require treatment for gum problems.
  2. There are multiple causes: The disease develops when inflammation occurs, allowing bacteria to move below the gum line and pockets to form as the gums pull away from the teeth. Possible factors behind the inflammation may include poor oral hygiene, changes in hormonal levels, illness, certain medications, age, and genetics.
  3. There are a number of possible symptoms: You should talk to your dentist if you notice any changes in your oral health, such as discomfort. Common warning signs of periodontal disease include sore, red gums, gingival tissue that bleeds easily after brushing and flossing, persistent bad breath, receding or swollen gums, and loose teeth.
  4. Periodontal disease can cause tooth loss: In the advanced stages, known as periodontitis, the connective tissue between the teeth and gums can dissolve completely, causing teeth to fall out.
  5. You can actually help prevent the disease: With the proper steps you can actually protect your smile from tooth loss and the onset of gum problems. Start simple: each day you need to brush twice and floss once. We also recommend quitting tobacco products, such as cigarettes or smokeless tobacco. Also, see your dentist at a minimum of twice a year for a thorough dental cleaning to remove plaque, a byproduct of bacteria, from your teeth. A few simple steps and you can enjoy a healthier smile.
