What Can You Give Kids this Halloween Besides Candy?

added on: October 18, 2016

Do you love greeting Trick-or-Treaters at your door, each Halloween, but hate the idea of spending yet another year handing out candy that could ultimately be bad for their smiles? Since plaque bacteria feed on sugar, too much sugar can greatly increase a kid’s likelihood of developing dental cavities. Fortunately, there actually are some fun alternatives to traditional Halloween treats, the kind that will elicit smiles and be safe for them, as well. So if you want to opt for something healthier than candy, stock up on one of these family dentist-approved treats, instead!

Look for Fun Items that Are Kid-Friendly and Dentist-Approved

It is helpful to remember that there is no Halloween rule that says what you hand out has to be food. So while crackers, pretzels or other items low in sugar are healthier alternatives to sugar-filled candies, why not think even more outside the candy bag, and opt for a fun treat that won’t require dental fillings, down the road?

  • Small toys, games, puzzles, etc. are great surprises.
  • Other big hits include glow-in-the-dark items, from bracelets and necklaces to stickers or even temporary tattoos!
  • You could also find Halloween-specific items, such as spider rings, which are always a hit, or small toy ghosts, etc.
  • To help keep the costs of your Halloween loot low, look for items at the dollar bin of your favorite big box store, or visit a dollar store to see what they have available. Many craft stores also offer a variety of seasonal toys and items, often deeply discounted as the holidays approach!
