Can You Prevent Gum Disease? Part One

added on: July 6, 2016

Did you know that some studies indicate that nearly 50 percent of Americans may be suffering from gum disease? Gingivitis is the name used to describe gum inflammation, which can lead to gum disease if left untreated. Periodontitis and periodontal disease are other terms used to describe gum disease. Whatever you call it, though, gum disease can be a big problem for your smile. Not only can it lead to irritated, inflamed and even bleeding gums, it can eventually cause your teeth to loosen or even fall out. Fortunately, you can do a lot to help prevent gum disease. If you want to enjoy healthy gums and a beautiful smile, it is time to learn more about how to maintain your gums’ oral health!

Q. Can Dental Hygiene Help Protect the Gums?

A. Yes. Excellent dental hygiene is key to keeping both your teeth and gums healthy. Unfortunately, many people neglect key aspects of preventive dental care.

While the majority of adults brush their teeth at least once a day, few stick to a diligent hygiene routine that includes twice daily brushing and daily flossing, which is equally important. In fact, recent studies indicate that less than 30 percent of adults in America actually floss their teeth every day!

If you want to prevent gum disease, and reduce your chance of developing other oral health threats such as cavities, make sure you brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice daily, and floss between each of your teeth once a day, to help remove food particles and bacteria left behind after brushing.
