Do You Have Dental Anxiety?

added on: October 15, 2015

Do you have dental anxiety? For many people, dental anxiety is a real threat to their oral health. Anything that stands between you and the routine dental care you need is a serious issue. Fortunately, we understand and have a solution: sedation dentistry.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Question: What is dental anxiety?

Answer: Dental anxiety refers to fear a person has regarding the dentist office. If the sights, sounds, and smells of the office make you apprehensive or if you avoid even the most minor treatments then you may have anxiety. Unfortunately, avoiding the dentist can increase the risk of tooth decay, infections, gum disease, and even tooth loss.

Question: Does Dr. Locke have experience with sedation?

Answer: Yes. In fact, Dr. Locke is a member of the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation. He has experience with providing calming solutions for anxious patients, helping them receive the care they need to improve their oral health.

Question: How does oral sedation work?

Answer: The patient will take a pill prior to the procedure. The doctor will recommend a light meal the evening before and nothing to eat or drink after midnight. After the procedure, the doctor will provide aftercare information.

Question: Will I need to take time off work?

Answer: You will need to take the day of the procedure off. The sedation takes time to wear off so you will not able to drive yourself home. You should arrange for a friend or family member to take you home and stay home until you have recovered. You shouldn’t drive for at least 24 hours. If missing work is an issue, the doctor can actually perform multiple procedures in a single visit, limiting the amount of time you will need to miss work.
