Do You Need Teeth Whitening or Porcelain Veneers?

added on: June 11, 2015

If you have stained teeth then you probably don’t feel eager to show off your smile. In order to remove or mask discoloration, you need a cosmetic treatment. We offer two methods of dealing with teeth stains. Do you need teeth whitening or porcelain veneers?

What Causes Teeth Stains?

There are actually two very different types of teeth stains. The most common are surface stains, also known as extrinsic stains. They are the result of the foods and drinks we consume, as well as smoking or tobacco use. The other type form below the surface of the enamel and are referred to as intrinsic stains. Fluorosis, trauma to the tooth, and the use of medications such as tetracycline can lead to intrinsic stains. Before recommending a cosmetic treatment we will first identify the cause of your discoloration.

Zoom! Whitening

We typically recommend this option for surface, or extrinsic, stains. We first apply a bleaching gel to your teeth, which we activate with a special curing light. The entire procedure only takes about an hour and can brighten teeth by up to three shades. Many people prefer this treatment because it can be completed quickly and doesn’t require multiple office visits.

Porcelain Veneers

If you have intrinsic discoloration then many teeth whitening procedures may not properly address them. Fortunately, we can mask the stains with the application of porcelain veneers. They are made from thin shells of porcelain and are placed onto the front of the tooth. The veneers are lifelike and stain-resistant, providing decades of quality restoration.

Which One Do I Need?

The best option for your smile will depend on the cause and severity of your discoloration. We will perform a thorough exam to decide which cosmetic treatment will best address your teeth stains. If you have any questions, please contact our office today.
