Does Your Tooth Need A Crown Or Veneer?

added on: February 23, 2016

Despite being coated in the hardest substance in the human body (tooth enamel) our teeth are not impervious to damage. When a tooth becomes damaged or stained, you may feel embarrassed about the appearance of your smile. However, with a restoration we can improve the esthetics of your tooth. Does your tooth need a crown or a veneer?

Common Esthetic Concerns

When will you benefit from a restoration? Whether you need a crown or a porcelain veneer, a restoration is necessary for a number of different scenarios, including:

  • Permanently discolored teeth
  • Cracked/chipped teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Misshapen teeth

Remember, if a tooth has become damaged then treatment is crucial to avoid the onset of decay or infection.

Dental Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed onto the front of the teeth. They are use for the more visible teeth. Placement involves removing a thin layer of enamel and taking impressions. The porcelain restoration will then be fabricated and placed when the patient returns for the next visit. They are made from porcelain due to the material’s strength, stain resistant capabilities, and lifelike appearance. We can use them to completely alter the appearance of the teeth.

Dental Crowns

A crown doesn’t just fit onto the front of the tooth. Instead, this restoration completely covers the tooth. While veneers are more for cosmetic issues, crowns can be used to address restorative ones as well, repairing broken, fractured, infected, or severely decayed teeth.

Like veneers, they can be made from porcelain (as well as number of other materials). After the doctor removes a portion of the tooth and takes impressions, the restoration will be designed and fabricated. As with porcelain veneers, the restoration is then placed during a follow up visit. The doctor will make any necessary adjustments before placing the dental crown with a powerful adhesive.
