added on: October 1, 2015

Estimates show over ten million people suffer from TMJ disorder, also known as TMD. The disorder affects your temporomandibular joints, which allow you to eat and speak. How do you treat TMJ dysfunction? With the right treatment you can avoid the uncomfortable symptoms of this common disorder.

TMJ Disorder Quiz

  1. True or False: Strain on the jaw joints causes the disorder.
  2. True or False: Symptoms range from headaches to jaw pain.
  3. True or False: You can take preventive measures.
  4. True or False: The doctor can treat the issue with restorations or an oral appliance.

Answer Key

  1. True. The disorder occurs when your jaw joints undergo excessive amounts of stress. The strain may be the result of injury to the jaw or face, tooth loss, dental misalignment, malocclusion, or chronic teeth grinding (also known as bruxism). In order to treat the problem we need to assess the cause and severity of the issue.
  2. True. How do you know if you require treatment for TMJ issues? You may notice discomfort in your face or jaw, as well as a popping or possibly crackling sensation in your jaw. You may also encounter regular headaches or earaches. Should a patient also grind his/her teeth, then sensitivity to hot or cold foods/drinks and toothaches may also be symptoms. If you think you may be experiencing the symptoms of TMD then contact your dentist to discuss possible treatment options and to undergo a thorough diagnosis.
  3. True. To avoid TMD you should seek treatment at the first signs of discomfort. You should also avoid chewing on hard or chewy foods, as the repetitive actions necessary could exacerbate the symptoms.
  4. True. In most cases we can address the problem with an oral appliance. Similar to a nightguard, the device repositions the jaw to ease tension. Patients wear the device at night while sleeping. We may also suggest muscle exercises to be repeated daily, easing the tension in your jaw joints. A restoration or possibly a replacement tooth can address malocclusion and help remove the strain from your joints.
