How Does A Crown Help My Smile?

added on: November 5, 2015

Our goal is to help you maintain a healthy and properly functioning smile. This means you can eat and speak without discomfort or difficulty. Often, we need to restore a tooth that has become damaged or experiences decay. In these situations we may suggest a dental crown. How does a crown help your smile?

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

Question: What is a crown?

Answer: A crown is a cap that fits over the tooth. The restoration protects the tooth from decay, infection, or further damage. We design them to mimic the appearance of your teeth and provide a lifelike restoration. We first prepare the tooth by removing a small amount of structure. We then take impressions of the teeth. After the restoration is fabricated we check the fit and place it with a powerful bonding agent. Receiving one typically takes about two visits.

Question: Do they have cosmetic applications?

Answer: Yes. We can place them to address permanent teeth stains, reshape a damaged or malformed tooth, and to change how the teeth look. Since we use lifelike materials, the restored teeth will always look natural.

Question: Can they improve the function of my smile?

Answer: Yes. We often suggest them for correcting cavities, repairing broken or cracked teeth, worn down teeth, and to complete a tooth receiving a root canal. We can also use them to help replace missing teeth, anchoring a dental bridge into place or to complete a dental implant. You can then enjoy a whole smile once again.

Question: What are they made from?

Answer: We use two different materials, depending on where the tooth is located. For those near the front of the mouth we use porcelain. This material looks natural and is durable and stain resistant. For teeth near the back of the mouth, which must endure powerful bite forces, we can place a zirconia restoration. These are very durable while providing a lifelike esthetic. If you have any questions about repairing a tooth then contact our office today. We want to help you improve your oral health.
