It Might Be Time to Rethink What You Know About Dental Care: Part Two

added on: June 17, 2016

Have you begun to worry that the lessons you learned about how to maintain healthy teeth, are not actually sufficient for keeping your smile healthy? Many adults struggle with cavities, gum disease and other dental problems, often simply because of poor dental hygiene or a lack of preventive dental care, some of which could stem from inaccurate beliefs about what good oral care actually entails. Fortunately, it is possible to prevent most oral health threats, by simply sticking to an excellent hygiene routine and attending regular checkups and cleanings.

Myth: Dental checkups once a year are essential!

It is important to visit the dentist regularly, for both checkups and exams, but many patients find they need to visit far more than once a year in order to best prevent dental problems like cavities. Even twice a year may not be frequent enough to thoroughly prevent oral health issues. Remember, calcified plaque bacteria is responsible for creating cavities and contributing to gum disease, if it is left to remain on the teeth. This tartar, as it’s called once calcified, can only be removed through a professional cleaning.

Misconception: Flossing can cause gums to bleed.

Many patients wrongly believe that flossing can be the reason their gums bleed, and therefore may neglect this important preventive practice. Flossing is actually one of the best ways to keep your gums healthy.

If your gums appear inflamed, dark red or purple (healthy gum tissue should be a light pink tone), or bleed easily, these are common symptoms of gum disease, which means your smile is likely in need of professional care such as a thorough cleaning or even periodontal therapy.

To prevent future gum problems, be sure to floss at least once a day.
