Simple Ways to Keep Young Smiles Healthy: Part One

added on: July 1, 2016

As a parent, you have a lot of responsibilities vying for your time, but few are probably as important to you as helping to raise happy and healthy kids. In fact, you probably take great care to help them form healthy habits, from eating non-fried vegetables and drinking plenty of water to being active each day. Do you sometimes wonder what more you could be doing to help care for their smiles, though? Many parents wonder what it takes to help keep kids teeth and gums healthy as they grow. Fortunately, your family dentist is a great ally, with lots of helpful tips about how to keep your youngsters’ smiles healthy! Best of all, many of them can be fun for your whole family.

Teaching Dental Hygiene Doesn’t Have to Be Hard

If getting your kids to brush their teeth each night feels like pulling teeth, why not use these simple steps to make imperative dental hygiene more fun and productive for the whole family?

  1. Let young children choose their own toothbrushes and toothpastes. This can help make them feel more in charge of their own dental hygiene, and can go a long way in making sure they look forward to, or at least are happy to, brush their teeth when it is time.
  2. There are actually a number of fun and quirky flavors of toothpaste, including everything from grape and bubblegum to bacon! Just make sure you help your children select products that are both age appropriate and approved by the American Dental Association!
  3. Also, when your child is still a baby you should start rubbing his or her gums with a wash cloth during bath time.  This will help your child transition to a toothbrush when it’s time.
