Could Your Smile Need Restorative Dentistry?

added on: August 9, 2016

Have you grown concerned that you might be struggling with a dental issue? Cavities are one incredibly common dental problem, one that affects nearly 90 percent of the adults in America. Gum disease is also widespread, with some studies indicating that half of American adults may currently be struggling with gum disease. While preventive dentistry is your best line of defense against these and other oral health issues, it is not the only way you can protect your smile. In the case of an existing dental problem, such as a cavity, prompt restorative action is the best way to protect your tooth and to restore your oral health!

Know the Symptoms and Pay Attention to Changes In Your Smile

One way to prevent painful dental issues is by paying close attention to any changes in your smile. Even somewhat subtle changes can actually be warning signs of dental problems that will require restorative treatment to save your teeth and improve your smile’s health.

  • If your teeth appear to have a yellow residue on them, even after brushing, this could be plaque buildup, which is responsible for causing cavities and contributing to other conditions, as well. A prompt dental cleaning should be able to remove the film, and may even prevent dental problems before they have had time to develop. Grey lines and white patches are other common indications of cavities.
  • Heightened sensitivity, especially discomfort, is another warning sign of a dental problem. You could have a cavity that requires a dental filling, or an infection that might require root canal treatment and a dental crown.
  • If your gums appear inflamed or red, or if they bleed easily, these could be indication of gingivitis, or an even more severe stage of gum disease. Periodontal therapy could help reverse these symptoms, and restore your oral health. You should not delay treatment, though, as the gums can worsen with time, eventually leading to tooth loss.
