Think Twice About What You’re Putting In Your Glass

added on: August 30, 2016

Are you a diligent tooth brusher, and even a regular flosser yet you still seem to struggle frequently with oral health problems, such as chronic dry mouth or cavities? Maybe you have been fortunate enough to enjoy good dental health in the past, but wonder if there is anything more that you should be doing to help ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy for years to come? While many people think of dental hygiene and routine checkups and cleanings, when they think about preventive dental care, there is actually another simple step you can take to help keep your smile healthy. And that is to think about what you’re putting in your drinking glass, because that single decision can have a big impact on your oral health, for better or for worse!

Avoid Sugary and Acidic Drinks, and That’s Not Just Soda

Sugar-filled and acidic drinks can both lead to cavities. While sodas are one of the most commonly blamed culprits behind cavities, they are hardly the only drink that could potentially lead to erosion of your teeth’s enamel.

Any drink that is high in sugar and/or acidity can be bad for the teeth and lead to adult tooth decay. So read the labels before purchasing sports and energy drinks, sweetened teas, coffees filled with cream and sugar, and even juices and smoothies. Opt for beverages that are low in sugar, and avoid drinking highly acidic beverages as much as possible. Even adding lemon to your water, while flavorful, can be problematic for your teeth’s health.
