The Role of Dental Fillings
When a tooth succumbs to tooth decay and a cavity develops, the bacteria and the decayed material of the tooth must be removed and the cavity must be filled to ensure the continuing health of the tooth. Otherwise, decay can continue until bacteria reaches and infects the tooth’s pulp (the innermost, nerve-filled part). Once the tooth’s pulp becomes infected, it is in peril of dying, and root canal treatment must intervene to remove the infected pulp and preserve the tooth’s structure. If, however, a dental filling is placed, the bacteria are removed, and the tooth is reinforced to prevent further decay.
Types of Dental Fillings
Contemporary dentistry offers two types of dental fillings: amalgam fillings and composite resin fillings. Amalgam fillings feature a blend of silver, tin, aluminum, zinc, and mercury and are silver in color. Composite resin fillings are made of the same material used for dental bonding and are tooth-colored. Of these two types, your Waco dentist, Dr. Locke, only offer one type of dental filling. Because researchers have debated about the risks of using amalgam fillings because they contain mercury and because amalgam fillings have a tendency to leak and deteriorate over time, Dr. Locke offers only composite resin fillings. In addition to being mercury-free, composite resin fillings offer better cosmetic results and are very durable.
