Waco Dentist Discusses Intrinsic and Extrinsic Stains

added on: February 26, 2013

couple smilingDid you know that two types of stains can afflict teeth? These stains differ by the part of the tooth that they affect. The two types are called intrinsic and extrinsic stains, and the causes of each differ. Here to discuss intrinsic and extrinsic stains is your Waco dentist, Dr. Corbet Locke.

Intrinsic Stains

Intrinsic stains affect the inner portion of the tooth below the surface of the enamel. These stains can be caused by infections or trauma to the mouth that cause the tooth to discolor. Intrinsic stains may also develop from the natural aging process. They appear in a grayish or brownish color.

Extrinsic Stains

Extrinsic stains occur on the outer surface of teeth, or the enamel. These stains are often caused by strong, dark pigments found in foods and drinks. Some drinks that can cause stains include coffee, soda, and red wine. Smoking has also been linked to extrinsic stains on teeth, and so has poor oral hygiene. These stains are typically darker than intrinsic stains.

Teeth Whitening in Waco

If your teeth are stained intrinsically or extrinsically, your Waco cosmetic dentist, Dr. Locke, can help. Professional teeth-bleaching treatments are proven to whiten teeth several shades. Dr. Locke offers two methods of treatment for patients seeking whiter teeth: at-home treatment and in-office treatment.

The at-home treatment requires patients to wear whitening trays filled with a bleaching gel for a set amount of time each day during two weeks of treatment. At the end of two weeks, patients’ teeth are visibly whiter. The in-office treatment takes only a single visit. The treatment lasts about an hour and shows instant results. During in-office bleaching, Dr. Locke applies a whitening formula to the teeth, which is activated by a special light. At the end of the process, teeth are 8-10 shades lighter.
