How Do You Know if It’s TMJ Disorder? Waco Dentist’s TMJ Assessment

added on: April 28, 2013

hands on cheeksThrough the course of our dedication to helping you ensure the utmost dental health and function, Dr. Locke has spoken extensively about the phenomenon of TMJ disorder and its ability to generate a wide variety of symptoms, such as how the jaw dysfunction can often be the cause of frequent headaches and other craniofacial pains. Because of its wide range of symptoms, TMJ disorder can be difficult diagnose, and many patients can endure their discomfort for years before learning that it originates with a functional jaw problem. To help you find relief from chronic TMJ pain, read below as your Waco dentist explains how to determine if you might have TMJ disorder.

It Might Be TMJ Disorder If…

Your temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, are the joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull and act as the pivots upon which your mouth opens, closes, and moves around. TMJ disorder describes a condition where these joints and muscles surrounding them become damaged or misaligned from excessive pressure, which can originate from a number of different causes (i.e., teeth-grinding, an uneven bite, or a physical injury).

To determine if your jaw is misaligned, stand before a mirror and watch closely as you slowly open and close your mouth from a resting position. If you feel or notice that your jaw moves to the side, as though adjusting itself, when it opens/closes, then your jaw may be misaligned and suffering from TMJ disorder. This may also be the case if you habitually grind your teeth (bruxism), or if your pops/clicks when you open and close it; both are common symptoms of TMJ disorder.
