What Happens During an Oral Cancer Screening?

added on: June 18, 2015

As part of our approach to general dentistry, we often take the time to look for the early warning signs of serious oral health issues. Along with scans for tooth decay and gum disease we will also watch out for the earliest indicators of cancer. What happens during an oral cancer screening? In order to have a greater chance of a full recovery this disease must be caught in the earliest stages.

Answer Key

  1. True. We will scan your gums and the inside of your mouth for the possible indicators of oral cancer. We offer this exam as part of our routine dental checkups, which you should undergo twice a year. Adults especially need to have their mouth examined for signs of oral cancer a minimum of once a year.
  2. True. People who smoke or drink excessively can experience a higher risk of developing cancer. However, even if you abstain from alcohol or tobacco you still need a screening, as 25{dcbe0cd52ce35e2f156887e14605e24111ce99c14f01d3853732956d43020bdd} of those diagnosed do not smoke or drink.
  3. True. If you experience sudden discomfort in your mouth that doesn’t subside then you need to have your mouth examined. Possible symptoms include sore areas, rough patches, or lesions that don’t heal after 14 days. Unexplained bleeding, changes in voice, or chronic hoarseness could also be warning signs. Finally, if you experience sudden weight loss in conjunction with the above symptoms, you may need to have a screening conducted immediately.
  4. True. Depending on what we find, we may recommend either a brush or scapel biopsy. We work with an oral surgeon, who we will refer to perform the procedure.
