What Happens When I Break A Tooth?

added on: February 11, 2016

What happens when you break a tooth? Even though our teeth are coated in a protective layer of enamel, they can still become chipped or cracked. You need to see a dental professional to address the issue, otherwise your tooth could develop decay or possibly even an infection. Fortunately, we can repair the tooth and return it to full function and appearance.

See the Dentist After Your Break a Tooth

After you chip a tooth try and gather up the pieces of the tooth to bring to the office. You may also need to apply a piece of gauze to stem any bleeding. A cold compress against the side of the face can reduce swelling as well. You should see the dentist as soon as possible, as a damaged tooth exposes sensitive inner structure to bacteria, increasing the risk of tooth decay and infection.

Treatment Options

We have two very different restorative available for patients who break a tooth:

  • Dental Crown: A dental crown fits over the visible portion of the tooth. We can use them to repair fractured or chipped teeth. We make them from a variety of materials, including metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all ceramic, or zirconia. The material we use will depend on the placement and severity of the damage. Placement takes as little as two visits.
  • Cosmetic Bonding: With cosmetic bonding, we can repair chipped teeth with the same material we use for dental fillings. After cleaning the tooth the doctor places several layers of bonding material. The bonding material will also be shaded to better blend with your smile. The doctor will then cure the tooth under a special light. The entire procedure can be completed in just one visit.
  • Porcelain Veneers: For minor chips or issues with the appearance of the tooth we can also place veneers. Made from thin shells of porcelain, veneers change the shape and appearance of the tooth, masking chips, discoloration, and other esthetic concerns. The placement takes about two visits to complete.
