When Do You Need A Restoration?

added on: February 18, 2016

A dental restoration is placed in order to repair a tooth. When do you need a restoration? We may prescribe one for a variety of reasons. However, if you don’t seek restorative treatment when you need it, serious complications can develop.

FAQs: When Do You Need A Restoration?

Question: Do you need one for fractured teeth?

Answer: Yes. If you feel pain in your tooth, especially following an injury, but don’t see any physical damage, you should still see a dentist. A dental fracture may not be visible to the naked eye, but can provide an opportunity for bacteria to reach the inner tooth structure, causing decay and a higher risk of infection. We can perform a root canal and place a dental crown to repair a cracked tooth.

Question: What if the tooth is broken or chipped?

Answer: We can restore a chipped or broken tooth, but the procedure we use will depend on the severity of the damage. For more minor damage we may perform cosmetic bonding, replacing the lost structure with a composite resin, the same we use for fillings. If the damage is more severe, then a dental crown may be recommended.

Question: What happens if you don’t place a restoration?

Answer: Without a restoration the damage could potentially provide an avenue for bacteria to reach the layers of dentin and eventually, the inner pulp. First, you may develop a cavity and as the decay spreads, a dental infection. Along with increased discomfort comes the risk of tooth loss. However, by repairing the damage you can significantly reduce these risks.

Question: Will the newly repaired tooth look natural?

Answer: Yes. Our restorative treatments are designed to blend with your smile. Our crowns are made from lifelike porcelain, as are veneers. Our dental bonding procedure involves a composite resin we can shade to better match your surrounding tooth structure.
