Healthy Gums Equal a Healthy Mouth

added on: January 20, 2011

Do you have red, swollen, tender gums that bleed when you brush or floss your teeth?  Maybe you suffer from bad breath and hardened plaque build-up at the gum line.  If so, you might have gum disease and don’t even know it.

If you have gum disease, be assured that you are not alone.  80{dcbe0cd52ce35e2f156887e14605e24111ce99c14f01d3853732956d43020bdd} of Americans have gum disease, which results from the emission of bacteria from plaque and tarter build up at the gum line.

Once gum disease sets in, the bacteria eat away at the bonds between the teeth and gums.  The human mouth is moist, dark, and warm, making it the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive.

I’m Dr. Corbet Locke, a Waco-area dentist, and I make your health my priority.  If left untreated, gum disease can lead to serious overall health problems, such as increased risk of heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and respiratory disease.  Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among American adults.

I don’t want you to suffer now or have long-term effects later, so my team and I will design a custom treatment plan to fit your particular needs.  Your mouth is always screened for signs of gum disease at your general dental appointments.  If the disease is found in the moderate to mild stage, it will be treated with antibiotics and procedures such as scaling (removal of tarter from below the gum line) and root planning (smoothing teeth roots to eliminate areas of high plaque concentration).  This process is called deep cleaning.  After having your deep cleaning appointment, frequent follow-up visits are required to monitor progress and prevent a recurrence.

I will use new technologies based on the latest scientific research to conservatively treat your gum disease. For more information, please contact my office at (254) 776-4888.
