Receiving a filling is a common procedure, one nearly everyone undergoes at some point in his or her lives. But when do I need a filling? How do I know this is the right procedure for my smile issue? We can assess the health of your smile before recommending the procedure. We can also clue you in on some of the more common warning signs that you need a restoration.

Common Questions About Dental Fillings

Question: Why do we need fillings?

Answer: You need this restoration if you develop a cavity. Tooth decay occurs when bacteria bypasses enamel (via damaged teeth or poor oral hygiene) and reaches the inner layers of enamel, causing decay to form. A restoration fills the cavity and prevents the decay from spreading and potentially causing an infection. The procedure protects your tooth and ensures you enjoy a whole and healthy smile.

Question: What are they made of?

Answer: Traditionally, dentists would offer fillings made from metals, such as silver, gold, or amalgam. However, we opt for a metal-free and esthetically pleasing alternative with composite resin. The material can be shaded to match the tooth so only you and the dentist will know you have a cavity.

Question: Why doesn’t the doctor use metal ones?

Answer: Amalgam fillings contain trace amounts of mercury. However, composite restorations contain no mercury, making it safe for children, elderly, pregnant women, and anyone with metal allergies. Plus, patients just prefer a more lifelike restoration.

Question: What does the procedure involve?

Answer: First, we use a local anesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable. Then we remove decay form the tooth before placing the composite resin. We cure the resin with a light and then polish the tooth thoroughly. The entire procedure can be completed in just a single visit.
