Do I Need a Filling?

Treatment for Bruxism
added on: April 16, 2015

When confronted with an aching tooth, many people wonder, “Do I need a filling?” We offer this restorative procedure to address tooth decay and return your tooth to full function and health. Natural looking and durable, you can enjoy a restored tooth in just one visit.

What is a Dental Filling?

A filling is a restorative treatment designed to repair teeth that have developed tooth decay. The procedure can be completed in a single visit. In the past dentists typically used amalgam, or metal. The restoration stood out against the rest of the tooth and over time could even change shape, increasing the risk of further decay or damage. However, we now use composite resin, a lifelike material that offers durable and long lasting restoration.

How Do I Know If I Have a Cavity?

If you have a cavity treating it quickly can prevent the decay from spreading and leading to a serious infection or abscess. Common warning signs include tooth sensitivity to hot or cold food and drinks, as well as a persistent toothache. If you encounter either of these symptoms please don’t ignore them. Instead, see your dentist right away for a diagnosis.

What Does the Placement Involve?

What happens when you receive a filling? First, we will administer a local anesthetic to ensure you are comfortable. Then we will remove the decayed tissue from the tooth. At that point we will apply the composite resin, which will be specially shaded to blend with your tooth structure. As the material cures under a special light we can sculpt and then polish the tooth. In a single visit your tooth will be restored and protected against further decay or discomfort. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you think you may have a cavity that requires treatment, please contact our office today.
